COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The heat during Monday’s Memorial Day ceremonies in Coldwater forced the Coldwater High School marching band to cut short the number of performances for the day.
One of the female band members fell during the ceremony at the Four Corners in downtown Coldwater. Band Director Katie Jewell says she is doing fine after being checked out at ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital.
After that incident, Jewell said in a Facebook post that she had the students remove their jackets and hats to keep them cooler and safe. After the parade, she said many of the students were overheated and Jewell was worried about more issues happening if they continued with the program as planned.
She then decided not to have the band take part in the rest of the ceremonies at the U.S. 12 bridge and and at Oak Grove Cemetery.
Jewell said it was not a decision she made lightly because they take the Memorial Day events very seriously but she added her first priority always has to be the health and safety of the kids in her care.
