COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A suspected drunk driver is lodged in the Branch County Jail awaiting arraignment accused of abandoning two children by the side of the road after he allegedly crashed his mini-van which ended up in a ditch Saturday afternoon in Girard Township.
The accident was reported shortly after 1:00 p.m. on East County Line Road at Hadlock Road south of Tekonsha. Branch County Central Dispatch said a passing motorist stopped at the scene and called 911, reporting there was a man with a white mini-van, possibly intoxicated, along with two small children, with his van still in the ditch.
The Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate the crash and no names were released. WWMT-TV yesterday quoted Undersheriff Keith Eichler in saying preliminary reports show the 32-year old suspect was a so-called super drunk with a blood alcohol content of at least .17, or more than two times the legal limit.
WWMT-TV also said a family member picked up all three and left with the man being spotted a short time later in Coldwater and arrested.
There was not a news release issued by the Sheriff’s Department on the accident.
