STURGIS, MI (WTVB) – Investigators for the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department say speed was a factor in a crash that killed a motorcyclist and injured a mother and her daughter Saturday afternoon.
20-year-old Juan Aguilar-Reyes of Sturgis was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident which happened at about 3:00 p.m. on Fawn River Road near Balk Road.
The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office said the motorcycle driven by Aguilar-Reyes was traveling at a high rate of speed when it crashed into a Jeep which was turning into a driveway.
The driver of the Jeep, 39-year-old Marcy Gayhear of Sturgis, was injured and had to be flown out. Her 15-year-old daughter was taken to a nearby hospital. Both the mother and daughter were wearing their seatbelts.
The Sheriff’s Department says Aguilar-Reyes was wearing his helmet at the time of the crash, which is still under investigation.
