BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – A former Athens High School science teacher investigated for having sex with a student faces up to 20 years in prison on a related charge.
29 year old Tyler David Millward was arraigned Monday in Calhoun County District Court on charges of using a computer to communicate with another to commit the crime of third-degree criminal sexual conduct and three counts of lying to police.
Millward was arrested Friday evening at an East Leroy apartment. The charges are a result from the investigation that was opened in January 2018 over Millward’s alleged involved in a teacher/student relationship,”
Prosecutors have alleged that between July 24, 2017 and January 9, 2018 Millward used his phone to send texts to a 16-year-old female student he was meeting for sex.
Prosecutors also alleged that he lied to police about having sex with the girl, about texting her, and about taking her to a hotel.
Millward, who was in his third year with the district when the investigation began, was terminated from his teaching job in February,
The now 17-year-old former student sat with Millward’s attorney at the defense table and told Magistrate Joe Brutsche he did not need to impose an order for no contact between she and Millward.
“He has never been a threat and he has never hurt me,” she said. “He never told me to say anything or push me to do anything against my will. I wish to have contact.”
Millward is also scheduled to stand trial August 2, 2018 on a charge of domestic violence following an altercation April 19 with his wife in Springfield. He has pleaded not guilty.
