COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Union City man who was scheduled to go on trial next week in Branch County Circuit Court entered into a plea agreement with prosecutors Monday.
31-year-old Jeremiah Johnson was arrested following a violent domestic dispute in March 2018, which led to a Michigan State Police trooper hurting his knee.
A court spokesperson says Johnson entered no contest pleas to charges of domestic violence and assaulting, restricting and obstructing a police officer. A second count of assaulting a police officer as well as a sentencing enhancement for being a third time habitual offender will be dismissed in exchange for the pleas.
Johnson is scheduled to be sentenced September 10, 2018.
Court officials blocked off three days for Johnson’s trial, which was to have started next Tuesday but it has been scrubbed because of the plea agreement.
Johnson was accused by authorities of beating his wife before police arrived. State Police Trooper Michael Thyng injured his knee as he and a Union City police officer were trying to place Johnson under arrest.
