COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The City of Coldwater Planning Commission is scheduled to review a site plan from the American Moslem Society on Monday night for a proposed two story building which would contain a mosque and language school at the current site of the Society’s cultural center at 129 Perkins.
The 33,000 square foot building would be constructed on two-and-a-half acres of land.
The Planning Commission approved a special use permit request last December so it could used in a A-2 One and Two Family Residential zoning district.
City Planner Dean Walrack says in his report for Monday’s meeting that the development plan will include the retention of the current cultural center building along with the removal of a residence and a store.
Approval of the site plan will depend on six contingencies including storm water management, right-of-way facilities, parking, lighting and signs.
Traffic and parking have been among the concerns raised. Walrack said in his report the applicant is proposing 89 spaces for the site and that on-street parking is not allowed on either side of the street in this area of Perkins.
The plans have been drawn up by Professional Consulting and Consulting of Detroit. The company’s Rick Najib said last December the peak day would be Friday when services are conducted.
Walrack earlier said the place of worship use will be the primary function of the site. The education function would be limited to weekends and only deal with religious and cultural studies.
