GRAND HAVEN, MI (WTVB) – In girls high school volleyball, Coldwater went 3-2 and got to the semifinals in the Gold Bracket of the Grand Haven Lakeshore Classic Tournament Saturday. The Cardinals defeated Byron Center (25-17, 25-21) and East Kentwood (25-23, 24-26, 15-9) but lost to Jenison (20-25 and 24-26) as they finished second in pool play.
The top two teams in each pool were placed into the Gold Bracket. Coldwater then defeated the three time defending Class A State Champs from Novi (25-23, 23-25, and 15-11). Coldwater then lost to Hudsonville in the semifinals (21-25 and 19-25).
Olivia Foley led Coldwater in assists with 99 as well as digs with 56, and had 11 kills. Laynee Paarlberg had 29 digs. Tyler Scheid led the team in blocks with 8 and had 26 kills. Anna Tappenden had 17 kills and 37 digs.
Malorie Rzepka led the team in kills with 46 and had 39 digs. Abby Herman had 16 kills while Ellory Farmer had 22 digs. In addition, Sam Rodesiler had 17 kills, 5 blocks, and 41 digs, Amber Sunderland led the team in aces with five.
Coldwater will host Kalamazoo Central and Adrian on Wednesday which will be Parent Night. It was originally planned to be Youth Night, but it will be held September 12 instead.
Bronson opened their season Saturday by capturing the Carrie Adams Invitational hosted by Battle Creek St. Philip. The Vikings defeated Athens (25-13, 25-9), Portland Saint Patrick (25-15, 25-11) and Otsego (25-16, 25-15) in pool play. They then rallied to defeat St. Phils 2-1 (18-25, 25-10, 17-15) in the quarterfinals, Centreville 2-0 (25-20, 25-15) in the semifinals and Camden-Frontier 2-1 (25-22, 24-26, 15-11) in the finals.
Keona Salesman was the tournament Most Valuable Player as she had 11 aces, 81 kills, seven blocks, one assist and 37 digs. Ashton Wronikowski had 13 aces, 28 kills and 10 blocks. Jolie Smoker had 29 kills, seven aces and six blocks, Kiera Lasky had 51 digs and nine aces, Maddy Thompson had seven kills, Meagan Lasky recorded 152 assists, Paris Outwater had 38 digs and Scyler Cary had 21 digs.
Union City finished as the runner up in the Silver Bracket of the tournament. The Chargers lost to Harper Creek (15-25, 9-25) and to Leland (23-25, 21-25) but defeated Garden City (25-11, 25-14) in pool play. In the Silver Bracket, Union City defeated Otsego (25-21, 25-21) and Hanover Horton (25-23, 25-14) but lost to Fowler (14-25, 13-25).
Ryanne Pyles had 19 digs, Bracy Swift had 26 kills and 11 digs, Lillian Bambacht had 20 kills, 16 digs and eight blocks, Lexi George had 57 assists and 12 digs and Sydney Falkner had 11 digs.
