UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – For more than 60 years, the Union City Rotary Club has been making and selling maple syrup. The longtime director of the annual fundraising project in Union City is Rotarian Jerry Snyder. He spoke at Thursday’s meeting of the Coldwater Township Sunrise Rotary Club and said each year, they tap hundreds of maple trees in Union City and boil down 7,000 to 10,000 gallons of maple sap.
According to Snyder, that produces 250 to 300 gallons of maple syrup. He said 2017 was a down year with just 150 gallons of syrup but they bounced back with 252 gallons this year.
Snyder says it’s a very rewarding feeling for the club to know the proceeds from the maple syrup sales allow for the contribution of between $15,000 and $18,000 for community service and international projects.
