COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A suspect who the Michigan State Police say broke into a Ovid Township home and threatened a 59-year-old resident Monday morning is lodged in the Branch County Jail pending a Branch County District Court arraignment.
State Police say the resident called Branch County 911 just after 6:30 a.m. to report suspicious activity outside his home.
While on the phone with 911, the resident was confronted at a glass patio door by a lone suspect. The suspect then broke the glass on the patio door and got inside. The suspect allegedly assaulted the resident and then went to the kitchen to get a glass of milk and a knife, which investigators say was used to threaten the resident.
A Michigan State Police trooper then arrived on scene, which caused the suspect to flee.
A K-9 unit was brought in to help in the search for the suspect through a swamp and wooded area.
The suspect was later found and arrested. State Police say they suspect the man also tried to steal the resident’s vehicle from the driveway prior to entering the home.
The unnamed suspect was lodged in the Branch County Jail on Home Invasion, Felonious Assault, Malicious Destruction to a Building, and attempted Auto Theft. The subject was already on parole from St. Joseph County and had a valid parole violation warrant at the time of his arrest.
The name was being withheld by authorities pending his arraignment in District Court.
