COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – If you were alive on this date 17 years ago, you’ll never forget where you were when terrorists crashed airplanes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Another terrorist attack was stopped by passengers on board United Airling Flight 93 which crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania thus preventing the hijacked plane from hitting the U.S. Capitol.
Just a few hours after the attacks, then Congressman Nick Smith told us what he saw and felt when American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon.
Smith said he heard the blast and saw the smoke coming up from the area of the Pentagon. Shortly after that, Smith said the U.S. Capital and nearby office buildings were evacuated.
All flights throughout the country were grounded for two days as the world changed forever that morning.
Security measures were also increased at government buildings including the Branch County Courthouse where police cars were stationed outside of the entrances.
