COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – It doesn’t look like the Business Loop I-69 project in Branch County will be starting up anytime soon.
The dispute between road contractors and a union continues with no end in sight. Michigan Governor Rick Snyder held a press conference Tuesday and said the two sides will not agree to a short-term or long-term agreement.
The work stoppage has affected around 150 road projects in Michigan including the rebuilding of Interstate 696 in Macomb County and the Interstate 75 project south of Detroit. Snyder says much of the work falls under federal work rules so he can’t declare a State of Emergency and force workers to return to their job.
He is threatening to use the National Guard to operate heavy machinery so the work can resume and says he hopes to meet with both sides again later this week.
