COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council approved the purchase of vacant lots on Thompson Blvd. from the Branch Intermediate School District on Monday night at a price of $44,000.
The city was the lone bidder for the lots which sold for $5,500 apiece. The BISD Board of Education approved a bid from the city last month for the eight surplus construction trade lots.
The city has been looking at extending Thompson and they have applied to the Michigan State Housing Development Authority for a grant to build two single residential modular homes in an effort to provide more affordable housing.
The funds for the purchase of the lots will come from the city’s Capital Improvement Fund instead of the general fund.
The BISD lots are near seven vacant lots that are being sold by Jim Weiss to the city at a total price of $38,500. City Manager Keith Baker said in his memo to the Council that buying both the BISD property and the Weiss land will allow the city to control the design and price point of homes constructed in the area.
