COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Firearms deer hunting season starts Thursday in Michigan, and for some drivers who have had to take their vehicle into the repair shop after an encounter with one of Bambi’s cousins, it could not start soon enough.
The middle of November can be a dangerous time to be on the road as there seem to be deer all over the place.
According to the Branch County 911 Central Dispatch log for Tuesday, there were 10 car-deer accidents reported.
As usual, most of the accidents happen just before sunrise or just after it gets dark.
Four of the 10 car-deer accidents were reported between 5:33 p.m. and 6:42 p.m.. Two on West Colon Road, one at Farrand Road and the other at North Matteson Lake Road, were reported within two minutes of one another.
If you can not avoid hitting a deer, Michigan State Police say don’t swerve. Instead, you should brake firmly, hold onto the steering wheel and bring your vehicle to a controlled stop. Pull off the road, turn on your emergency flashers and be cautious of other traffic if you get out of your vehicle. Don’t forget to report the crash to the nearest police agency and your insurance company.
