UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Two women got out safely Thursday morning as a fire destroyed their home on Union Lake in northwestern Branch County.
Union City Fire Chief Dave Hughes says the fire at the home owned by Amy Bradley at 1201 Sharon Lane, which is just off of Tuttle Road, was reported at about 5:45 a.m..
Union City firefighters were initially dispatched to what was reported to be a fully engulfed structure fire. They got assistance from Burlington, Tekonsha and Athens crews in the form of manpower and tankers.
It was believed the fire was caused by a wood burning stove in the home but the official cause is under investigation by the Michigan State Police Fire Marshal division.
Crews started to clear the scene at around 8:00 a.m..
The Victim Services Unit for the Branch County Sheriff’s Department is assisting the fire victims. Offers of help for them have also been posted on the Union Lake Community Association’s Facebook page.
