COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Niles woman charged in connection with a traffic accident almost a year ago that caused serious injuries entered a guilty plea Monday in Branch County Circuit Court.
22-year old Megan Bretschneider admitted her guilt to an amended count of attempted operating while intoxicated causing serious injury.
The two original charges of OUIL causing a serious injury accident and operating with a blood alcohol content of .17 or more, which put the charge into the so-called “super drunk” category, would be dismissed in exchange for the plea.
The two car crash happened during the evening of December 2, 2017 on US 12 near Lott Road.
Michigan State Police said at the time of the crash that Bretschneider’s eastbound car drifted into the westbound lane and collided head on with a Ford Bronco which was driven by 38-year old Christopher Smith of Quincy.
Smith’s 35-year old wife Jamie was pinned in the car and according to troopers suffered multiple fractures. She was airlifted to a Ft. Wayne hospital for treatment. Christopher Smith was treated and released from ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital while Bretschneider was flown to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Bretschneider is scheduled to be sentenced on February 4, 2019.
