UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – A Friday recount produced no change in the final vote total on a ballot question which asked Union Township residents if a Planning Commission should be formed.
The question was defeated by 25 votes, 268-243 November 6, and a hand count of the ballots Friday confirmed the original tabulation.
Union Township Clerk Sharon Boley conducted the recount, which was overseen by the Branch County Board of Canvassers.
Branch County Clerk Terry Kubasiak said the recount lasted just over three hours.
There was a delay in counting the Union Township ballots election night because there problems balancing the tabulator with the voter list. Results did not come in until the wee hours of the following morning.
The request for the recount was made by a representative of the citizens group Concerned Citizens of Branch County, who supported the ballot question.
The group is fighting DTE Energy’s plans to build wind turbines in northwest Branch County. Members say they are not against wind energy but they have numerous concerns about the siting of the wind turbines.
They recently asked Branch County to intervene on their behalf and put together a county wide ordinance concerning wind turbines. Right now, there are no zoning laws in Union Township.
