ZEELAND, MI (WTVB) – In boys high school basketball, the Coldwater Cardinals suffered their first loss of the season on Thursday night as they were beaten by Allendale 70-47at the Zeeland East Holiday Tournament.
Allendale took control of the game in the first half as they built a 36-22 lead. They ended any hopes of a Coldwater comeback in the third quarter as they outscored the Cardinals 21-14 to extend their lead to 57-36. Allendale’s six-foot-ten junior center Ryan Corner scored a game-high 19 points.
McDonald’s Player-of-the-Game Gage McGuire led Coldwater with 18 points and nine rebounds while Dylan Targgart added 10 points. McGuire now has 1,079 career points. He will need four more points to pass Cam Holicki for second place on the CHS boys basketball career scoring list. Rick Gates is the all-time leading scorer with 1,179 points.

Coldwater’s freshman squad defeated Allendale 56-26. Nate Tappenden led Coldwater with 22 points while Gavin Budd had 10 points. They will play for the freshman tournament championship at 2:00 p.m.. The Coldwater junior varsity team also won.
Anthony Layne scored 25 points while A.J. Crisp added 13 points as Tekonsha defeated Jackson Prep 61-32 in the first round of the Litchfield Holiday Tournament. Tekonsha will face the host school in the tournament finals after Litchfield defeated Pansophia Academy 81-43.
