COLDWATER, MI (WTVB)- The Branch County Board of Commissioners got an update during their Friday work session concerning the steps that are being taken to coordinate efforts to repair the dam on the Indiana side of Lake George.
Rick Weaver from the Lake George Cottagers Association said there were two major issues on the Michigan that have to be resolved. A lake board had to be formed, and the other issue dealt with legal lake levels.
In order to fund the repairs, a conservancy district was formed in Indiana, while a lake board had to be set up in Michigan. Petitions were submitted to Kinderhook Township in October 2018, but a snag developed when an attorney determined that a legal lake level had to be set. Weaver said they were confused because the Michigan lake level has not changed for 91 years.
The lake level is where the Board of Commissioners would possibly become involved, and Weaver indicated they were facing some time issues. The State of Indiana is requiring them to submit a district plan covering both states by January 20, 2019.
Weaver said they have asked the State of Indiana to grant them an extension because there are a lot of legal questions that still need to be answered.
