COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinal Gymnastics team had a record breaking evening on Thursday in their home gym against the Jackson Area Gymnastics team. While the visiting team won the meet 138.475 to 136.375, Coldwater smashed the team school record. The mark beat the previous team record, set in 2010, by more than a point. The Lady Cardinals posted 30 individual qualifying scores and 22 personal or season best scores on their way to the record breaking number. Coldwater is now 3-1 in the league competition.
In the vault competition, Coldwater was led by Leah Goodwin as the freshman placed first with a score of 9.225, earning her third Regional Qualifying score.
The Cardinals posted their highest team bars score in several years with a 33.975. Leading the way was freshman Layla Schoch with a personal record mark of 8.8. Erica Rodgers and Abby Travelbee tied for a third place finish at 8.425.
On the balance beam, Coldwater posted a season high best team score of 32.475. Travelbee was the top Cardinal on the beam, placing third with a personal record score of 8.425.
Coldwater finished the competition on the floor exercise, earning a team season high total of 35.6 points, saving their best for last. Goodwin and Travelbee took the top two spots with personal record marks. Goodwin took the win at 9.175 points. Travelbee posted 9.15 points for second. Claire Sheppard performed on the floor for the first time this season after being sidelined due to an injury and earned a regional qualifying score of 8.45.
In the All-Around competition, Goodwin tallied a personal record of 34.575 points to place second overall behind Jackson’s Maddie Girard. Travelbee finished right behind her teammate, placing third overall with a personal record total of 34.4 points.
Coldwater will finish up a long week of four competitions on Saturday at the Lowell Invitational.
