COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Several local banks have announced they will be providing relief to customers who are directly affected by the partial government shutdown.
Southern Michigan Bank and Trust officials say they will assist customers who are federal employees, employees who work for government contractors, vendors and other businesses that rely on the government’s workers.
Potential means of assistance include the waiving of fees for late payments on consumer and mortgage loans, deferring loan payments for up to three months for residential mortgages and home equity loans, waiving checking overdraft fees and waiving early withdrawal penalties on Certificate of Deposit’s.
Century Bank and Trust Friday also announced various relief solutions to those customers and federal employees in the community affected by the shutdown.
“As a local community bank, our focus is on the people in our communities,” said Eric Beckhusen, Chairman and CEO. “We want to do whatever we can to help lighten this financial burden.”

Both banks say they will work with customers on a case-by-case basis.
