COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – January is National Radon Awareness Month.
It’s estimated that one out of 15 homes in the United States have elevated radon levels, which some health officials say is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers.
Medical Director Dr. Lauren Vogel reported during Thursday’s Community Health Agency Board meeting that exposure levels are high in Branch, Hillsdale and St. Joseph counties.
He says there are steps you can take to reduce the risk of radon in your home. Eliminate smoking since smoking increases the risk of cancer with radon exposure. Increase the air flow by opening windows or using fans. Seal cracks in walls and floors with approved materials. Seal pipes and wire entry sources in walls. Before you buy a new home, review its radon resistant construction techniques.
