UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – A 30-year-old man is lodged in the Branch County Jail pending formal charges following a shooting incident at about midnight Monday.
Union City Police say they responded to a call of shots fired and subjects fighting at an apartment complex in the 400 block of North Broadway.
They were told a man discharged a sawed off shotgun after confronting a neighbor while using a racial slur.
Police say the gun was aimed at the alleged victim who was able to wrestle it away from the suspect.
The suspect was found unconscious in his apartment under a mattress. Police say several firearms were with him.
He was treated at Oaklawn Hospital before being taken to the Branch County Jail. The other person involved in the incident was not injured.
Union City Police were assisted by the Michigan State Police, the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi Tribal Police, the Calhoun County Sheriffs Department, and LifeCare Ambulance.
