COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – With bitterly cold temperatures continuing, all schools across Branch County and much of the state are closed again Thursday.
Heavy snow caused the cancellation of classes Monday and Tuesday, and now with temperatures well below zero and wind chills as low as 45 below zero, the Coldwater, Bronson, Quincy, Union City, and Tekonsha school districts, along with Pansophia Academy, St. Mary’s Assumption in Bronson, and the Branch Intermediate School District are shut down again Thursday.
With classes called off Thursday, that means most school districts have used seven cancellation days.
Under Michigan law, school districts are allowed six canceled days due to conditions beyond their control. Schools can request an extra three days from the Michigan State Schools Superintendent once they exhaust their six forgiven days. These are not automatically approved, as districts must show a need for extra time and an inability to reschedule missed days later in the year.
Last school year, around 200 districts statewide were granted additional days after making requests.
