COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Niles, Michigan woman charged in connection with a serious injury traffic accident in December 2017 was sentenced Monday in Branch County Circuit Court.
22-year old Megan Bretschneider admitted her guilt to an amended count of attempted operating while intoxicated causing serious injury.
She was given a 12 month jail sentence, of which six months were suspended over probation. Bretschneider was given credit for one day in jail and was also placed on probation for two years. She was also ordered to pay over $3,800 in restitution.
The two original charges of OUIL causing a serious injury accident and operating with a blood alcohol content of .17 or more, which put the charge into the so-called “super drunk” category, were dismissed in exchange for the plea.
The two car crash happened during the evening of December 2, 2017 on U.S. 12 near Lott Road.
Michigan State Police said at the time of the crash that Bretschneider’s eastbound car drifted into the westbound lane and collided head on with a Ford Bronco which was driven by 38-year old Christopher Smith of Quincy.
Smith’s 35-year old wife Jamie was pinned in the car, and according to troopers, suffered multiple fractures. She was airlifted to a Ft. Wayne hospital for treatment. Christopher Smith was treated and released from ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital while Bretschneider was flown to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
