COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – It was messy around Branch County Wednesday morning, but it could have been a lot worse.
A mixture of precipitation fell during the overnight hours; however the mercury stayed above the freezing mark at the Branch County Memorial Airport.
Combine the mixture of frozen precipitation with the cold ground and early morning drivers had to deal with some slushy and icy roads.
After nearly a half dozen days of school were lost over the last couple of weeks because of bad weather, frustrated school officials around Branch County were forced to delay classes by a couple of hours. Temperatures warmed up by the middle of the morning which made driving conditions safer.
To the north, freezing rain and sleet caused many Lansing area school districts to shut down for the day. Nearly 50,000 Consumers Energy customers lost power as ice coated tree limbs and power lines. Most of the outages were in the Grand Rapids and Muskegon area.
