COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In order to get into compliance with changes to the State Election law, the Coldwater City Council Monday night passed a on first reading a resolution to amend the local filing deadline for nominating petitions.
The Council also introduced an accompanying ordinance which moves the filing deadline for City Council candidates from the 12th Tuesday to the 15th Tuesday before the August primary. That would make the nominating petition deadline for this year’s primary April 23, 2019 at 4:00 p.m.
City Attorney Megan Angell said under another change to state election law, no primary would be held if there were two or less candidates filing in a race before the primary deadline.
Michigan Election Law now permits cities to change the filing deadline for nominating petitions by resolution.
The second and final reading of the ordinance is scheduled to take place during the Council’s meeting March 11, 2019.
