DETROIT (WTVB) – Five wrestlers from Branch County are still alive at the MHSAA Individual Finals at Ford Field in Detroit.
Bronson’s Ben Modert (51-2) will wrestle for his second straight Division 4 title at 112 pounds on Saturday against Nolan Datema of Carson City-Crystal, while Union City’s Brayton Mears (35-4) will wrestle for the Division 4 103-pound state title against Bronson Marry of Hudson.
Coldwater’s Griffen Olmstead, Bronson’s Isaac Tappenden, and Union City’s Brayton Burgett are in the consolation bracket of the double-elimination tournament and will medal.
Olmstead (35-8) is in the medal round and has assured himself of finishing no worse than eighth at 171 pounds in Division 2. With two more wins, he could finish third in the state.
Tappenden (41-13) will medal and can finish no worse than sixth at 152 pounds in Division 4 after he reached the semifinals before losing on a 5-3 decision to Jorge Sereno of Hudson.
Burgett (34-7) is in the medal round and can finish no worse than eighth at 285 pounds in Division 4.
