LAKELAND, FL (WKZO-AM/FM) – Officials with the Detroit Tigers say that right handed pitcher Michael Fulmer is slated to have Tommy John surgery. effectively shutting him down through 2020.
Fulmer was taken out of the rotation early in spring training, in order to work on his lower body mechanics, but an MRI performed by famed sports physician Dr. James Andrews has apparently indicated the need for the operation.
Fulmer was the 2016 AL Rookie of the Year, but suffered through his worst season in 2017, going 3-12 with a 4.69 ERA.
Fulmer will seek a third opinion, but Andrews’ determination most likely will result in Fulmer missing all of the 2019 season and a major portion of the 2020 campaign.
