HOWE, IN (WTVB) – Howe Military Academy in Howe, Indiana will be shutting its doors later this year after 135 years of service and will not re-open for the 2019-2020 school year.
The news of the school’s closing was officially announced Monday and caught some people by surprise.
Howe Military President Retired Army Colonel Doctor Thomas Tate blamed rising costs and declining enrollment for more than a decade as the reasons behind the closing and that the fiscal requirements associated with operation and maintenance of Howe can no longer be sustained.
While there has been success recent months to advance the Academy, Tate said these achievements have not been realized in time to overcome the current financial shortfalls.
Howe Military will provide support and assistance to families, faculty, and staff in making alternative plans for the next school year. All academic, athletic, and extracurricular programs for the rest of this school year will still be held as scheduled.
