COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Even though crews began working on the site over two weeks ago, the official groundbreaking ceremony for the Coldwater Community Schools’ new fourth and fifth grade elementary building at 235 Western Avenue took place Wednesday morning.
The new school building will replace the nearly 60-year-old Lakeland Elementary building and is being built on the site of the former Coldwater Little League baseball diamonds.
Coldwater School Board President Ed Lake thanked district voters after they approved a millage and bonding issue to fund the school in November 2017.
Superintendent Terri Boguth says the grand opening is scheduled for December 2020.
Coldwater Mayor Tom Kramer said while the selling of the land to the district wasn’t the most popular decision with some, it was made on trust and the city’s experience with the schools.
A group of Coldwater students from Young 5’s through fifth grade joined officials for the ceremony.
Tower Pinkster is serving as the architect for the project, while Owen-Ames-Kimball Company is the construction manager.
