UNDATED (WTVB) – Voters were in a generous mood yesterday, approving most, but not all millage questions on the ballot in the area.
There were no elections in Branch County.
Hillsdale County voters said no to a law enforcement enhancement millage by nearly 700 votes. The five year millage question was voted down 2117-1402.
It would have raised taxes by 0.75 mills with the funds going to the Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Department to hire additional road patrol deputies and perhaps a corrections officer as well as new equipment.
Burlington voters approved extra money for operations but voters in Leroy Township defeated a road funding measure by just 16 votes.
In St. Joseph County, school funding issues in Sturgis and White Pigeon both passed.
Statewide about 30 percent of all requests for additional tax dollars failed. More road funding requests failed than passed, but most school bonding and finance issues passed.
All of the requests for renewed millages succeeded as did funding requests from libraries and fire departments.
