Lowell was born January 9, 1935 in Coldwater, MI to Leo and Geraldine (Smith) Knapp. He graduated from Coldwater High School in 1952. He served four years in the United States Marine Corps from 1958-1962. He remained patriotic and supportive of veterans organizations throughout his life. On August 1, 1959, he married the former Janet Marie Smith in Coldwater. They were married for 56 years at the time of her death in 2016.
During his working years, Lowell was employed by Federal Mogul, Wickes and Voltek, as well as owned his own business, Knapp’s TV & Appliance, all in Coldwater, where he’d resided most of his life. He and his wife enjoyed playing cards and having people come over to the house to visit. Lowell was a man of few words, but he also had a playful side. He had fun playing with his children when they were young and liked to play jokes. He could be hilarious.
He enjoyed listening to country music, playing his banjo and singing along. He was an excellent roller-skater, having honed his skills in the warehouse at Federal Mogul. He enjoyed fishing year ’round, mainly on Craig and Nottawa Lakes. Lowell loved mowing his lawn and was very particular about it. He was known affectionately by his family as a cantankerous old softie.
Lowell is survived by his children, Laurie (Mark) Ludlow of Quincy, Robert Knapp of Union City, Deborah (Mark) Lirot of Edon, OH and Lisa (Derek Radtke) Neitzert of Coldwater; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and his siblings, Barbara Bohrer, Charles (Sue) Knapp, Nelson (Gail) Knapp, Wauneta Russell and Beverly Knapp.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Waunda Robinson and Leon Knapp; and a grandson, Ryan McLatcher.
Memorial contributions are suggested to American Legion Post #52 of Coldwater.
