COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – An ordinance is scheduled to be introduced during Monday’s Coldwater City Council meeting that would reduce the number of days and hours consumer fireworks can be used in the city.
This comes after the State of Michigan amended its Fireworks Safety Act of 2012 last December which gave local communities more control to limit the use of fireworks.
For the Independence Day holiday when most consumers fireworks are bought and used, their use would be limited from June 29 until July 4. Fireworks on July 5 would be allowed if that day falls on a Friday or Saturday. Fireworks for consumers would also be permitted on New Year’s Eve as well as on the Saturday and Sunday before Memorial Day and Labor Day.
The hours for use would from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 a.m. on New Year’s Eve and from 11:00 a.m. until 11:45 p.m. on the other days. The maximum penalty for violating the ordinance would increase from $500 to $1,000.
City Manager Keith Baker says the proposed local ordinance would prohibit the use of consumers fireworks on public, school and church property as well as on anyone’s property without their permission.
