COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council got into a nearly 20 minute discussion on Monday night before they introduced an ordinance that would reduce the number of days and hours consumer fireworks can be used in the city.
City Manager Keith Baker said local communities now have more control to limit the use of fireworks after the State of Michigan recently amended the Fireworks Safety Act of 2012.
Except for New Year’s Eve, the cutoff time for fireworks in the city on the days they would be allowed is 11:45 p.m.
Most of the discussion was about enforcement of the ordinance and the potential for a $1,000 fine for violations.
Public Service Director Mark Bartell said the ordinance should have some teeth.
Eventually it was decided to have City Attorney Megan Angell bring back an amended ordinance that would not only have some teeth the Council asked for but some flexibility as well.
