COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council will be asked Tuesday night by City Manager Keith Baker that all City Council business be conducted through official coldwater.org email accounts.
According to Baker, some council members have requested that the city’s IT Department provide council members with official coldwater.org email accounts for their use in conducting their work for the city.
Baker feels the benefits include a more “professional” appearance and a separation for council members concerning their own correspondence and correspondence for the city.
Shortly after taking office last January, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer banned the use of private email accounts for official State of Michigan businesss.
Baker says in his memo to the council for Tuesday’s meeting that there may be a perception by some that the use of private email accounts suggests an effort to evade the legal requirements of the Freedom of Information Act, although the law is clear that email correspondence used to conduct government business is subject to such requests even if it is on a private server.
