COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The wet weather during the month of May is having a big impact on Michigan farmers as they are behind getting their crops into the ground.
Fields have just been to muddy for farm machinery to operate.
Midwest Communications Michigan Farm Directorr Rick Shields says corn planting is far behind last year.
Just 33 percent of the Michigan crop has been planted as of this week compared to 62 percent at the same time in 2018. In addition, just 29 percent of soy beans have been planted in the top production states. Normally, 66 percent of the crop has been planted.
According to the web site www.accuweather.com, it has rained in Coldwater on 23 days during the month of May but the daily rainfall totals have not been copious. The rainiest day was May 12 when 45-hundredths of an inch of rain was measured. The total amount of rain this month of 3.8 inches is actually below the average for May of 4.54 inches.
Heading into Friday, Coldwater has received measurable rain for 10 straight days.
The extended forecast shows a break in the soggy weather with sunny and dry conditions expected for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
