ZEELAND, MI (WTVB) – It was a record setting day for Coldwater at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division Two Lower Peninsula Track and Field Finals at Zeeland. The Coldwater boys finished seventh in the final team standings while the girls tied for 32nd.
Coldwater’s Dylan Targgart defended his championships in the discus and shot put and set two more school records in the process. His winning discus distance of 187 feet, seven inches broke Connor Covert’s 2016 record by almost seven feet. Targgart broke his own record in the shot put which he set earlier this year with a winning distance of 66 feet, 7 1/2 inches. Targgart also set a Division 2 Finals record as he broke a 2011 record held by former Detroit Lions defensive lineman Anthony Zettel when he was at Ogemaw Heights.
Coldwater’s Matt Gipple earned a medal as he finished seventh in the boys 100 with a time of 11.43. Kyle Foulk was 21st in the 3200.
The Coldwater girls 3200 relay team of Jayda Kelly, Elka Machan, Tyler Scheid and Kathy Potter broke a school record which had stood since 1988 as they finished third. Their time of 9:32.24 broke the previous Coldwater High School record set by Jill Strawser, Joan Monroe, Robin Brodt and Joy Strawser which was 9:39.9. Machan broke the school record in the 1600 for the third time this season as she finished ninth with a time of 5:03.11.
The Quincy girls finished fifth on Saturday at the MHSAA Division Three Lower Peninsula Track and Field Finals at Jenison. Madelyn Allman was second in the 300 hurdles with a time of 46.92. She along with Nikkia Cronk, Mackenzie Horsfall and Jessica Holcomb finished second in the 400 relay with a time of 50.31 as they set a school record in the event for the fourth time this season.
The 800 relay team of Cronk, Holcomb, Horsfall and Emily Hollenbaugh finished third in a time of 1:47.58. Quincy’s 1600 relay team finished 10th. Hollenbaugh also finished third in the high jump as she cleared five feet, four inches while Holcomb was seventh in the long jump with a distance of 16 feet. Cronk was 19th in the 200.
Bronson’s Jenna Salek earned a medal with a eighth place finish in the 400. Her time was a personal record of 1:00.19. Salek was 13th in the 200. Bronson’s Madelyn Thompson was 18th in the shot put and 15th in the discus.
Union City’s Lillian Bambacht was 16th in the 300 hurdles.
In the boys Division Three finals, Union City’s Gavin Hooker was 11th in both the 100 and 200.
Quincy’s Ian Trall was 13th in the 110 hurdles and ninth in the 300 hurdles. The Quincy 400 relay team of Alex Pickell, Trall, Axel Beltran and Devan Fisher finished 19th.
Jacob Krutsch of Coldwater, who attends Hillsdale Academy, won the Divison Four pole vault title.
