COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The updating of the city’s fire codes led to a lengthy discussion during Monday’s Coldwater City Council meeting.
After talking about it for almost 25 minutes, the City Council decided to introduce an ordinance that would implement several fire code changes and clarifications.
Final action is expected to take place during the Council’s June 24, 2019 meeting.
Fire Chief Dave Schmaltz and Fire Marshall Steve Trall want the city to adopt the National Fire Protection Association’s Fire Prevention Codes which were adopted by the State of Michigan in 2011.
The Coldwater City Council adopted Building Officials Code Administrators codes in 1995, but over the years, BOCA has ceased the updating and publishing of codes.
Trall is requesting some clarifications be published in city ordinances, particularly when it comes to open burning. Under the Open Burning chapter, campfires would be referred to as recreational burning.
The ordinance, which is expected to come back for formal adoption in two weeks, would also cover alarm systems, automatic extinguishing systems, automatic smoke and heat detection systems and smoke detectors.
