ANGOLA, IN (WTVB) – A man from Fremont, Indiana has been ordered to pay over $427,000 in restitution to the victims of an accident in August 2017 when his car crashed into a horse drawn carriage on Ray Road, just south of the Michigan-Indiana line.
According to State of Indiana online court records, 24-year-old Brady Duvendack was given 18 months of probation and a suspended sentence of that same length Monday in Steuben County Circuit Court after he entered a guilty plea to a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious injury.
The 547 day sentenced was suspended except for one day he has already served.
In exchange for his plea, four other charges were dismissed by prosecutors.
Four Montgomery residents were injured in the crash. The Steuben County Sheriff’s Department says Duvendack’s car hit the back of the buggy, causing all four occupants to be ejected.
13-year-old Benjamin Schmucker was flown from the scene by the Samaritan Helicopter with multiple injuries. 22-year-old Reuben Schmucker was taken to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne. 18-year-old Noah Schmucker and 23-year-old Jonathon Schmucker, who was the operator of the horse drawn carriage, were treated at the scene.
