STURGIS, MI (WTVB) – Sturgis Journal Sports Editor Corky Emrick, who earned the respect of high school coaches, athletes, athletic administrators and public safety officials for his news and sports coverage over the years, passed away suddenly Monday.
Among the many who offered condolences was Bronson Athletic Director Jean LaClair who said on her Twitter account that she can’t imagine this fall sports season without Emrick on the sidelines and that he will truly be missed.
Bronson Superintendent Rick Hilderly also said on Twitter that Emrick was not just a sportswriter, he was a champion of high school sports and of local student-athletes.
Emrick joined the Sturgis Journal in 1996 and became its Sports Editor in 2008.
Besides covering high school sports, he also covered police, fire and court stories. His work over the years earned him numerous awards from the Michigan Associated Press and Michigan Press Association.
