COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The City of Coldwater Planning Commission approved a site plan for a proposed senior independent living development Tuesday evening that would be located on the property of the former Fremont School building.
The action comes after the Planning Commission during their last meeting voted 9-0 to approve a conditional rezoning of nine-and-a-quarter acres of land from A-1 One Family Residential to A-3 Multi Family Residential.
An ordinance for the conditional rezoning is scheduled to come before the Coldwater City Council next Monday night.
Tuesday’s action by the Planning Commission is part of the process developers are going through. The rezoning request is contingent on the awarding of Michigan State Housing Development Authority tax credits.
MVAH Partners of Butler County, Ohio has a purchase option on the site and authorization from the property owner, Coldwater Community Schools, to seek the rezoning.
MVAH is proposing to build up to 48 senior independent living units that would be for persons 55 years and older. Plans call for the units to include a mixture of one and two bedroom ranch villas.
The development will also include a clubhouse with on‐site management, a community room, fitness center, and outdoor recreation space.
Developers say about half of the site will remain open space and will be offered to the city for park expansion if so desired.
