LAGRANGE COUNTY, IN (WTVB) – A wanted fugitive who allegedly tried to run over a Steuben County Sheriff’s Department deputy near the West Otter Lake Public Access Site was captured a short distance away from that incident Saturday morning.
21 year old Vincent H. Chilcote was located at a residence on U.S. 20 near the LaGrange-Steuben County line and was taken into custody by authorities without incident.
Chilcote was wanted on warrants out of Steuben, LaGrange, and Noble Counties for failing to appear for court hearings on charges of burglary with a deadly weapon and theft.
Authorities got a tip and tried to arrest him Friday morning. After Chilcote allegedly tried to run over the deputy, the officer used his firearm and struck Chilcote’s vehicle which continued to drive away.
Chilcote managed to stay at large until his capture about 30 hours later.
The name of the deputy who was involved in the shooting incident is being withheld pending an investigation by the Sheriff’s Office. Also under department policy, the deputy has been placed on administrative leave.
