BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – A special prosecutor will not press charges against a Calhoun County sheriff’s deputy who hit and killed a boy with his vehicle in May.
Jackson County Prosecutor Jerard Jarzynka has ruled that no charges will be filed in the death of 11 year old Norman Hood in Battle Creek. The deputy was heading to a crime scene without his siren or flashing lights on and was going more than double the speed limit when he hit Hood while Hood was riding a motorized mini bike.
Investigators say it looks as though Hood turned in front of the vehicle in dashcam footage of the incident.
The youngsters family has filed a $25 lawsuit against the Sheriff’s Department and Calhoun County.
The Michigan State Police said last month that the deputy was traveling at 66 miles an hour at the time, which was almost twice the speed limit in the area.
