COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Noon and Coldwater Township Sunrise Rotary clubs have received a Rotary International District 6360 matching grant to help support Lakeland Readers are Leaders.
The program at the Coldwater School District Lakeland Elementary school provides books and is designed to foster a love of reading for the students. 61% of the kids at the elementary are economically disadvantaged while 63% of the students scored above average growth in reading scores as compared to the Michigan average for reading.
Readers are Leaders believes it is crucial to provide what they term “reluctant readers” with high interest books to develop into powerful readers, resulting in higher reading scores while encouraging lifelong reading.
With the funds from both Noon and Sunrise Rotary, the clubs were able apply for and be granted the $5,500 for the Lakeland Readers are Leaders program.
The money along, with other donations, allow for the books to bepurchased so that each student can receive a new book each month. The book the student receives is linked to the student’s reading level.
District 6360 has 56 Rotary clubs across the District’s 13 counties in Southwest Michigan.
