MARSHALL, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinals are one victory away from qualifying for the post season as they edged long time rival Marshall 21-20 on Friday at Rich Hulkow Field in Marshall. Marshall grabbed a 6-0 lead in the first quarter but a pair of Jaxon Janusz touchdowns from one and 24 yards in the second quarter put the Cardinals ahead. Marshall tied the game on a 82 yard touchdown run and two point conversion just before halftime. The Redhawks grabbed a 20-14 lead early in the fourth quarter but missed their second PAT which proved to be costly.
McDonald’s Player of the Game Matt Gipple tied the game on a four yard TD with 3:29 left and Angel Sereno’s extra point put Coldwater ahead for good. Aiden Marsden then sealed the deal with an interception. The Cardinals had to overcome a 243 yard performance by Marshall running back Thailan Taylor. Gipple rushed for 163 yards on 27 carries while Janusz had 10 carries for 66 yards.
Coldwater improves to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the Interstate 8 which ties them with Parma Western for second in the league. Coldwater plays at Parma Western next week.
