BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater High School girls cross country team finished first Tuesday in the second Interstate 8 Conference jamboree of the season which was hosted by Pennfield at Marywood Golf Course in Battle Creek.
The Lady Cards scored a 50-57 victory over the league-leading Marshall Red Hawks. Coldwater is now tied with Marshall for first place in the I-8 girls standings.
The big win was led by race winner Elka Machan who had a time of 17:33.8. Three other Coldwater runners finished in the top 15. Chloe Vickers was sixth, Legend Szafranski finished eighth and Carolyn Potter was 15th.
Kyle Foulk, Myron Lafty, and John Aerts led the Coldwater boys to a fifth place finish, a competition won by Harper Creek over Marshall. Foulk was fifth with a time of 15:48.7. Lafty was 15th while Aerts was 18th.
Bronson won both races on Tuesday at the Big 8 Conference jamboree hosted by Reading. The Vikings won a tightly contested boys race in which the top three teams were separated by only four points. Bronson had 61 points followed by Jonesville with 63 and Concord with 65. Quincy was fifth and Union City was seventh.
Three runners from both Bronson and Quincy finished in the top ten. Bronson’s Luis Ortiz was sixth, Ashton Wells was eighth and Aden Hathaway was tenth. Rhett Reif led Quincy with a fifth place finish. Erik Butchart was seventh and Jacob Reif was ninth. Colin Priest was 40th for Union City.
Bronson edged Jonesville by eight points to win the girls meet. The Vikings had 47 points followed by Jonesville with 55 and Homer with 91. Quincy finished fourth. Union City did not have enough runners for a team score.
All of the Bronson runners were in the top 16. Grace Welch was fourth followed by Allison Fish (6th), Abby Ware (8th), Danis Silva (13th) and Jenna Salek (16th). Quincy was led by Avery Rufenacht who finished third. Kyla Burdick was 38th for Union City.
