COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In boys high school soccer, Coldwater opened the post season at home in convincing fashion Thursday night, with an 8-0 mercy rule victory over Charlotte in the MHSAA Division 2 District quarterfinals.
The Cardinals got their opening goal 3:21 into the game from Mubarak Said, assisted by Saleh Mohammed. Coldwater scored five more in the first half to take a 6-0 halftime lead, then scored twice in the second half to finish the game with 15:55 to play.
Ayash Ahmed scored four goals, all in the first half, with two goals from Amine Mohammed, with the other goal from Grant Bridges. The Cardinals got other assists from Mukhtar Abdulla, Brady Travelbee, Abe Alhjaji, Mohamed Aljabaly, Eric Arreola and Ahmed Omar.
Ahmed Salem and Michael Orozco-Aburto combined for the shutout in goal, as Coldwater outshot Charlotte 29-0.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 12-7 overall and will host top ranked Richland Gull Lake in the district semifinal Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. Gull Lake advanced with a 5-0 win over Vicksburg Wednesday.
On the other side of the bracket, third ranked Marshall moved on with a 9-1 win over Eaton Rapids Thursday, while Harper Creek beat Pennfield 2-1 in an overtime shootout Wednesday.
