QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – A proposed rezoning of land for a Dollar General store at the intersection of Fremont and Central Roads has angered some Algansee Township residents.
There are fears it will affect such businesses as the J and L Corner Store and Short’s on the Water.
An online petition has been posted on www.change.org line in hopes of collecting 500 signatures.
The Algansee Township Planning Commission is scheduled to hold a public hearing next Monday night at the Township Hall on the rezoning request. Petitioner Dan Coville is proposing to rezone two-and-a-half acres at the northeast corner of the intersection from R-2 Residential to C-1 Commercial. The proposed Dollar General can not be built there unless the land is rezoned. The Algansee Township Board would have the final say on the rezoning.
Dollar General already has three Branch County stores in Bronson, Coldwater and Quincy.
Crain’s Detroit Business reported in July that the discount retailer has doubled the number of Michigan stores to over 500 in the last decade. Many of the stores have been built in rural locations.
Crain’s also reported that Dollar General won’t say how many of their planned 975 new stores will open up in Michigan this year.
