PORTAGE, MI (WTVB) – Led by Elka Machan’s gold medal winning performance, the Coldwater girls cross country team qualified for the Michigan High School Athletic Association State Finals Saturday with a third place finish at the Division Two Regional meet in Portage.
Machan finished first in a time of 18:14.9 and won the girls race by 13 seconds. Coldwater’s Legend Szafranski also earned a medal by finishing 13th. Chloe Vickers just missed getting a medal as she was 16th. Cece DeWitt was 28th while Carolyn Potter was 34th.
Grand Rapids South Christian edged Coldwater by two points for second place in the girls team standings. Coldwater edged Parma Western by four points for the final transfer spot to the State Finals next Saturday which will once again take place at Michigan International Speedway.
This is the first time a Coldwater girls cross country team has qualified for the State Finals since the 1980’s.
The Coldwater boys were eighth. Kyle Foulk qualified for the State Finals for the first time as an individual with a sixth place finish.
Three Interstate 8 teams, Harper Creek, Marshall and Hastings, finished in the top three and qualified as teams for the State Finals.
