COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Coldwater Township couple who were charged with mistreating a then two-year-old boy about a year ago both entered into plea agreements with the Branch County Prosecutors Office Monday in Circuit Court.
34-year-old Allen Nagle entered a no contest plea to fourth degree child abuse. A second degree child abuse charge was dismissed in exchange for the plea.
Meanwhile, 24-year-old Cortni Pitts entered a guilty plea to attempted second degree child abuse. In exchange for the plea, two counts of second degree child abuse were dropped by prosecutors.
Both are scheduled to be sentenced December 16, 2019.
They were arrested following a Michigan State Police investigation, which according to authorities, started after the boy was slapped in the head in October 2018 at a local restaurant for taking food off his stepsister’s plate.
Troopers found the boy was malnourished and bruised when they went to the couple’s home to investigate. Three other children in the home were found to have normal body weight.
